 Welcome to Elm Class

Class Overview

Welcome to our Elm Class page. We are a friendly and hardworking group who enjoy learning. You can find us across the courtyard area from Reception, next to Maple Class. Miss Ramsay is our teacher. When she has release time on Friday afternoon Mrs Holmes teaches us.

Please be aware that our Indoor P.E is on Tuesday and our Outdoor P.E is on Thursday.

Year 4 and 5 children are expected to continue to develop their independent working behaviours and become more responsible for their own learning. We learn in a variety of different ways, taking our direction from the National Curriculum. We enjoy asking questions, having interesting discussions and learning through doing.

Our topic for the Summer Term 1 is Europe. We share all of the same topic materials with Cedar and Willow Class. You can find out more about what Elm Class will be up to on our Topic Web, ready to download below.

Homework is given out every Friday and is due in again on Wednesday. The children can expect Spellings, Maths work and usually an English or Topic-based activity.  They are also expected to read ten pages a day, five days a week. The children should not be working more than an hour and a half a week on their assigned task, although any extra research or practice they would like to do is always warmly welcomed.

Please see the bottom of the page, where you will be able to download this week's homework sheet.

Spellings are given out on Tuesday and tested the following week. Children are given two copies of the spelling list: one to keep in their tray, to practice during quiet moments in the school day, and another set to take home.

Please see the bottom of the page, where you will be able to download this week's homework sheet.

Supporting your child

There are so many ways to support your child's success. Regular reading with your child is so important as it supports learning across every single area of the curriculum. Please spend some time discussing the text with them. For fiction texts, discuss the genre, plot, characters, endings, language used etc. For non-fiction texts, discuss the type of text, its purpose, audience and structure. There are some question ideas in your child's reading record.

In Maths we will focus on the instant recall of times tables and number bonds. Children are expected to have a quick recall of all times tables from 1x - 12 x 12.
