Apple - Year 1

Welcome to Apple Class!

We are so excited to have you in Year 1 this year. Our classroom is a place where we learn new things, make friends and have lots of fun together. In Apple Class, we will explore exciting stories, discover amazing facts and grow our skills just like the branches of a tree reaching for the sky. Everyone’s ideas and efforts are important here and we can’t wait to see all the wonderful things you will achieve!

Monday to Thursday, your class teacher is Mrs Hall. On Friday, your teacher is Mrs Gilbert. Other adults helping you in class at different times in the week will be Miss Iggulden, Mr McKenna and Mrs Rowe.

Curriculum

As children move from EYFS into Year 1, we recognise this is a big step and we aim to make the transition smooth and positive. In Year 1, children begin to follow the National Curriculum, which brings more structure to their learning. However, we carefully balance this with opportunities for play, exploration and creativity, so that children continue to feel engaged and confident. Our goal is to build on the strong foundations from Reception, helping each child to grow in independence, curiosity and love of learning. We will still make time for play, creativity and discovery so that everyone feels happy, confident and ready to shine in their new adventures.

What to bring to school

Please bring in your named book bag and water bottle everyday.

A change of clothes and a pair of wellies should be brought in and remain at school.

Our P.E. days are Monday and Friday. Children are expected to come to school in their P.E. kit on these days.

P.E. Kit Expectations

P.E. T-shirt in house colour (Challenger – Red, Discovery – Green, Explorer – Purple, Voyager – Blue)
Blue or black shorts (no sports logos or tight cycling shorts)
Blue or black tracksuit trousers/jogging bottoms (no leggings)
Blue or black sweatshirt or school fleece – no hoods, please
Trainers or plimsolls
No jewellery on P.E. days, including earrings
Long hair must be tied back

Homework and spellings

Each Thursday, Maths homework will be sent home with the children, a PDF copy will also be uploaded onto ClassDojo. The homework is due back the following Monday. The homework is linked to what we have been working on in class that week and is aimed to be accessible independently, however we would love you to use this as valuable time to discuss your child's learning with them. On the reverse of the Maths homework will be the Topic homework menu, we would like your child to do at least one of these each half term and either bring it in or upload it onto ClassDojo.

Spelling patterns will be uploaded onto the school website and ClassDojo at the beginning of each half-term to allow you to practise at home.
